Five Fast Rules for Getting the Most Out of the Primeval Forest Trek

The Primeval Forest Trek is a pretty difficult hike. If you're not dressed appropriately, they may not let you go on the hike. Here are five things to remember to get the most out of your trek.

*Fees and tour summary are noted at the end.

Rule No.1: Dress and equip yourself appropriately.

The area is known for rain and fog, so wearing a good pair of hiking shoes and rainwear such as Gore-tex jacket and pants are a must. A walking stick is recommended if you're not sure about your legs and back. Bug spray and band-aids are also good to have. Make sure also to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts, and avoid wearing black as not to attract bees. Be sure to read and familiarize yourself with the do and don'ts that are sent to you in advance.

Rule No.2: Make sure to bring something to drink and to snack on.

Bring 1 to 2 liters of drinks. We recommend that at least half of it to be sports drink that will help you with fatigue and give you energy. It's also important to bring energy bars or something sweet that your body can easily convert to energy along with your lunch.

Rule No.3: Stay on the trail and walk single file.

It is forbidden to stray off the trail that the Eco Tour Guide has chosen. There are poisonous snakes on the island, and moreover, you might hurt flowers and plants by walking off the trail. If you wish to look at plants or want to take pictures, always tell the guide to stop or wait. The guide can also help you with questions about the plants.

Rule No.4: Go to the bathroom before you leave.

There are no toilets on the trail, so beware. Bring a portable toilet if possible.

Rule No.5: Discuss options when you make your reservation.

The trek is long and hard with a lot of ups and downs. Never over estimate yourself. If you'd rather go at a slower pace, you might be able to get a private guide. They are also in the process of developing and easier trek for next year.

Look what's inside the fruit of a Japanese walnut that fell from the tree...

Fuyuichigo (literally "winter strawberries" or Rubus buergeri) berries that we found on our way back. Delicious!
