Stay Overnight and Enjoy the Onsen and the Seasons at their Best! The Best Onsen Ryokans

For those who want a relaxing stay at a hot springs inn and enjoy fabulous local cuisine, look no further. Onsen Sommelier Masahiro Ishikawa of Sado Seaside Hotel helped us select the best onsen ryokan within each category. Here is the A-list of Sado's onsen ryokan!

Direct-from-the-Source for Those that Want Something Different... Inns with Exceptional Water Quality

For those that want something different, I recommend Ryokan Iriumi at Sawata Onsen. The water of the hot spring is categorized as a Hydrogen Carbonate Spring, but as it is a Moor Spring whose water contains ancient plant fossils, the color of the water is black. The floor of the bath is covered with tatami mats, which is quite rare and adds to the feeling of something very special. Since the inn is operated by a fish monger, the seafood is guaranteed to be fantastic. There is also a brownish-red hot springs at Oyado Kagetsu, which is a Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate Spring.

Located near Ryotsu Onsen No.2 spring well, Minami Ryokan of Sumiyoshi Onsen prides itself in directly sourcing the hot spring water. They also operate an open-air bath, but it's closed for the winter since the water temperature gets too low during the cold months. Their seafood menu is legendary as the owner prides himself in going to Ryotsu himself every morning to pick out the best fish he can find.

You can also enjoy hot springs from the same source as Minami Ryokan at ten other inns including Hotel Shiiya and the more traditional Hotel Mancho. Ogi Onsen Kamome-so in southern Ogi also offers great direct-from-the-source bathing.

At Minami Ryokan, not only can you enjoy sashimi, but local cuisines such as Ebi Shinjo (deep fried minced shrimp dumpling) and their famous Oyster Motoyaki (grilled oysters on a half-shell.)

Tatami mats in the bathroom at Ryokan Iriumi. The black hot springs is said to be good for many conditions including wounds, skin kerotosis, and menopause.

Enjoy Sado's specialty fugunoko-no-kasuzuke (blowfish row pickled in sake lees.) An accommodation plan that includes a 13-course dinner "Sado-oki Goyo Course" is very popular.

Hot springs water comes directly from the source at Minami Ryokan. You can enjoy open-air bathing in their Salt Spring except in the winter.

Lake, Ocean, Pasture... Fabulously Located Inns

Hotel Osado located on a hill at Kasugazaki in Aikawa Area is known for its open-air bath that overlooks the ocean. Take in the beautiful sunset and the fisherman's fire. You can also enjoy the view from Hotel Azuma and Hotel Misaki located on the western beach. At Yahata Hot Spring's Hotel Yahatakan, you can relax in an elegant Japanese garden setting. The hotel is a favorite of the Imperial Family's. You can view Kamo Lake from Sado Green Hotel Kiraku, Yoshidaya, Hotel New Katsura, Aokiya, and Ryotsu Yamaki Hotel.

Hotel New Katsura boasts two types of baths: open-air baths and private open-air baths.

The open-air bath at Hotel Osado offers grand vistas of the ocean. Take in the beautiful sunset and fisherman's fire.

Listen to the birds chirping as you relax and revive yourself in the pine tree garden at Hotel Yahatakan.

Unwind in Your Own Space in Your Private Bath

There are three types of open-air baths available for private rental at Yuraku Nagaya at Sado Green Hotel Kiraku. Hotel New Katsura at Shiizaki Onsen also has open-air bath available for private rental. Kabuse Onsen Aikawa Yamaki has rooms with baths where you can rent the bath only. You'll find guest rooms with open-air baths at Hotel Azuma, as well as an entire wing dedicated to rentable open-air baths located at the tip of the cape where you can enjoy the ocean view.

Great Inns with Great Baths for the Budget Traveler

Located in Akadomari Area, Sunrise Jyogahama is connected to Akadomari Jyogahama Onsen, which is open to guests of the hotel. Wood Palace Imose in Hamochi Area is located close to day use hot springs and restaurants. At about 7000 yen to 8000 yen inclusive of two meals, you can stay at Sado Seaside Hotel for about the same price as a minshuku inn. And of course you can bathe as much as you want. From Akadomari Jyogahama Onsen, you can see Mount Yahiko and Mount Kakuda over the ocean from the tub.

Other inns where you can stay for about 8000 yen per night including two meals are: Sado Grand Hotel, Jugetsukan in Ryotsu Area, Hotel Sadoya, Ryokan Doyu, and Hotel Meoto in Aikawa Area.
