Chokokuji Temple
Type:Shinto shrine / Buddhist temple
"An ancient temple founded in 807 and apparently modelled on Yamato's Hasedera Temple. Zeami's record of how he crossed the pass from Matsugasaki and reached Hasedera Temple is found in his “Kintosho""(an account of his tour in the Gold Island). It is also virtually certain that the Nichiren Shonin also called in at this temple. The beautiful botan (tree peonies) all along the road up to the temple flower from the end of May to June making a colorful spectacle. The temple contains a triple Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) from the Heian Period (national important cultural asset) the Gochi Hall (prefectural tangible asset) and prefectural natural monuments in the shape of three Japanese cedars (sugi) and a Takano yew plum pine (maki). All of these bear witness to the depth of this temple's history. "
