Abutsubo Myosenji Temple
Type:Shinto shrine / Buddhist temple
The origins of this temple go back to 1278 when Tamemori Endo a Kitamo samurai (a samurai who used to serve under a retired emperor) became a fervent devotee of the Lotus sutra after spending time with Nichiren during his exile on Sado and changing his name to Nittoku Abutsubo (priest) and supported by his wife Sennichini turned their house into a temple. At one time this was the castle where Honma family in Takeda district lived and even today the place still retains an atmosphere of castle ruins. There is a famous story from the time when there was a castle here about how Kumawakamaru avenged his father Suketomo Hino who had been defeated in the Shochu Incident and exiled to Sado. In the temple precincts you will find Niigata Prefecture's only five-storey pagoda and the grave of Suketomo Hino.
