Experience History and Elegance of a Traditional Japanese Home
Stay in one of the historic homes of NIPPONIA, a cluster of beautifully restored traditional Japanese buildings located in historic downtown Aikawa on Sado Island. This area offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of gold mining in Japan.
The Charm of Aikawa District
Located on the west coast of Sado Island, Aikawa was once the center of Sado Island’s gold and silver mining industry, which began in the early 17th century. The discovery of gold deposits in 1601 led to the town’s rapid development, at one point boasting a population of over 50,000. At its peak, the mines employed thousands of workers, and the town became a melting pot of different cultures and traditions, as people from various regions of Japan came to work in the mines. This cultural influence is reflected in the local customs, festivals and architecture of the region. Today, numerous well-preserved buildings and cultural heritage sites remain for visitors to explore.
The Unique buildings of NIPPONIA
The NIPPONIA complex consists of four carefully renovated traditional buildings, offering a total of seven guest rooms. Each guest room is thoughtfully designed to reflect the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Sado, allowing guests a rare opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the deep historical and cultural charm of the region.
The Charm of Shimizu-ke
The front reception building, Shimizu-ke, serves as the gateway to NIPPONIA and a gathering space where guests and locals can interact. The building was transformed into a distinctive reception space from what was once a pottery kiln and store for Mumyoi-yaki ware, or traditional Sado ceramics. The ceramics originally crafted here are representative of the history of the region, crafted using reddish-hue iron-rich clay sourced near the Sado Gold Mine.
Shimizuya's architecture retains many historical features. To reach the Funé (Boat) Room on the second floor, guests pass through a built-in earthen storehouse, a traditional design element intended to protect structures from the area’s strong coastal winds. Other rooms feature repurposed elements, such as an old kiln transformed into a stylish table, and ceilings shaped like the hull of a ship, reflecting the region’s maritime influence.
Aikawa is filled with fascinating historical sites worth exploring. NIPPONIA staff are happy to make recommendations for local attractions and dining experiences, ensuring a fulfilling and immersive stay.
A Commitment to the Future
The restoration of the buildings used to create NIPPONIA was made possible through the collaboration of four key organizations: Sado City, Sado Tourism Association, Niigata Nippo Newspaper, and NOTE Corporation. Moving forward, we are committed to continue to revitalize Sado’s communities, supporting sustainable town development and preserving the region’s rich history and traditions for future generations.
