Oiran Dochu (courtesan procession) Cherry Festival

Gorgeous, flamboyantly-dressed oiran (courtesans), including Hamochi Dayu (tayu: high-ranking courtesan), Sakura Dayu and Gosha Dayu, slowly parade through streets lined with cherry trees in the Hamochi area, accompanied by many attendants. Down many streets, the oiran execute a unique walking style in a choreographed eight-figure pattern, wearing lacquered, high-platform, three stilted geta (wooden sandle-style shoes). The event includes performances of yosakoi folk songs and dances, and other local dance and music groups, as well as a market, which add excitement to this day in spring.
