The Day the "Hakusan Maru" Sets Sail Under a Blue Sky

The “Hakusan-maru” is Japan’s first fully restored 1,000-koku ship and is on display at the Ogi Folk Museum in Sado Province. Once a year, a large group of people work together to pull the ship out of the exhibition hall and into the plaza in front of it, where they hoist its sail—which is 160 tatami mats in size—for display. The sail-hoisting ceremony, performed to the rhythm of the “kiyari” chants, is a sight to behold.
