Kuninaka Area

This is an area where many temples, shrines, and Buddhist temples still remain, conveying the rich culture of Sado Island from the past to the present day. The precincts of these temples and shrines can be photographed in all four seasons, including the season of autumn foliage. In the plains and satoyama that stretch across the Kuninaka area, you may even spot the Japanese crested ibis, a National Special Natural Treasure.

Hakuundai

From the building with an observation deck halfway up the Osado Skyline, you can see both bays of Sado Island and the shape of the island. The Kuninaka Plain can be seen all around, and behind it, the Echigo Mountains can be seen over the Kosado Mountains. At night, the night view of Niigata city, Sado Island, and the Milky Way flowing stars are beautiful, and if you are lucky, you can see the city lights blending into the sea of clouds.

Seisuiji Temple

This ancient temple offers a wonderful view of the temple grounds no matter when you visit in spring, summer, fall, or winter. The stone steps distorted by the roots of the cedar forest along the approach to the temple, the moss-covered base of the cedar trees, all are picturesque. In addition, the heroic building of Guzeden Hall (literally: salvation hall), located in front of the temple at the top of the approach stairs, is a perfect subject for a photograph. The stage of the Guzeden is also accessible, but visitors should be careful as it is deteriorating.

Myosenji Temple Five-Story Pagoda

Myosenji Temple has the only five-story pagoda in Niigata Prefecture. The precincts of the temple are always beautiful, but the five-story pagoda is especially wonderful in the season of fresh greenery, framed by autumn leaves, and in winter when the pagoda is crowned with snow. The Niou statue at the thatched mountain gate has a cool expression, and you should not forget to take a picture of it as well. While paying your respects, make sure to take in the main hall and the storehouse, which are quite well built. Please note that photography is not allowed inside the main hall.

Otowa Pond

Otowa Pond is home to Japan's largest high-altitude floating islet. During the season of fresh green, the color of the tree leaves blending into the surface of the pond is very beautiful. In September, a poisonous mushroom called tsukiyotake can be seen in the vicinity, and since it glows at night, it is a mushroom that should not be missed as a subject of photography. The autumn leaves are also beautiful, but be careful of bees. Also, the area around the pond sometimes gets muddy, so choose appropriate footwear and watch your step.

Toki (crested ibis)

Ask people on Sado Island, and they will tell you that crested ibis are everywhere. Unless you know the area well, it is difficult to spot them, but you can usually see them in the rice paddies during the daytime. Especially in the Kuninaka Plain, it is easy to photograph them as they are feeding in the rice paddies, and they are even easier to spot in October, when the rice harvest is over, and they are in groups, which is their most beautiful time of year. The rule is not to get too close and photograph them from inside the car, so a telephoto lens is a must.

Sea Fireflies

Sea fireflies are glowing blue creatures that are abundant in Mano Bay. Most of the locals have never seen them before, which is understandable since they hide in the sand during the day and only come out at night. The best time to photograph them is on Saturdays near the new moon from June to October.
