Course Outline
This route is recommended for enjoying the flowers in early spring and early summer. Starting from the Aoneba trailhead, follow the trail along the river. In early spring, abundant melted snow water reflects the sunlight as it flows down the stream. Progress is slow due to the many flowers that bloom along the trail, such as katakuri (Japanese dogtooth violets) in April, the pretty white flowers of nirinso (Gnaphalium japonicum) in May, the pink frilly flowers of oiwakagami (Schizocodon soldanelloides var.magnus), which is seen only on the Sea of Japan side, and the popular shirane-aoi (Japanese wood poppy).
-
Equipment and Clothing
This is a course for beginners to climb along the valley. The path is narrow in places, so be careful! The path can be muddy due to melting snow, especially in the spring, so sneakers are not suitable. You will need to adjust your clothing according to the temperature and the weather. Raingear is recommended, as are leggings to keep your legs clean and comfortable. Gnats are everywhere as the temperature rises. Take precautions against insects.
-
Nirinso (Gnaphalium japonicum)
After taking a short rest at a place called "Yubu," the trail starts to climb steeply. Looking up the names of flowers and taking pictures may set the perfect pace for this section of the trail.
-
Oiwakagami (Schizocodon soldanelloides var.magnus)
On the way up, you will see a blue clay layer on the slope. This is the origin of the name "Aoneva" (blue + sticky) of the mountain trail. Do you know why it is called "Aoneva"?
-
The sticky blue clay layer that gives Aoneva its name
The Aoneva Crossroads where the trail meets the route up to Matone, is a grassy open space, perfect for taking a break after a steep climb.
-
Shirane-aoi (Japanese wood poppy)
From here, you will take the forest road and car road up the side of the gate to reach Donden Highland Lodge.
-
The view from Donden Highland Lodge
From the deck in front of the lodge, you can see Ryotsu Port and Lake Kamo below, and the Sea of Japan on both sides across the Kuninaka Plain. Your trekking will end with these spectacular views!
