Eco-tour of a pristine forest

TThis is an eco-tour organized by the Sado Tourism Exchange Organization in cooperation with Niigata University, Sado City, local villages, and guide associations. Entry is limited to 15 people per day on the Sotokaifu and Uchikaifu Routes (20 people are allowed on the Senju-sugi Course). *The pristine forest is within the Niigata University's Forest. There are three courses to choose from.

 

Kongo-sugi

 

Osakuraso (Primula jesoana)

 

Ginryoso (Monotropastrum globosum)

Sotokaifu Course

This is a powerful tour to see a group of giant cedar trees growing dynamically in the wind and snow, centering on the Kongo-sugi. Kongo-sugi became famous when its picture was introduced at the dinner hall during the 2008 G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit.

Time required: Approximately 6.5 hours (including breaks)

Available: May through early November

Fee: 10,000 yen

Tour time :8:30 am to 4:30 pm

    After meeting at the Sotokaifu Revitalization Center, participants will drive to the trailhead on their own led by a guide. Pick-up and drop-off by cab is also available. (approx. 20 minutes)

Uchikaifu Course

The path to and from the pristine forest is an old road over a mountain pass. You can fully enjoy the rich nature of Sado Island, including waterside forests, floating bogs, stone Buddhas, and lovely wildflowers.

Time required: Approximately 6.5 hours (including breaks)

Fee: 10,000 yen

Tour time: 8:30am - 6:00pm

Senju-sugi (Thousand-hand cedar)

 

Senju-sugi Course

Take a deep breath in a pristine forest of mysteriously shaped trees and moss. Beginners, elementary school students, and the elderly can also enjoy this tour.

Time required: Approximately 3.5 hours (including breaks)

Available: May through early November

Fee: 5,000 yen

Tour time: Departing from Ryotsu: 9:10am – 3:30pm, Departing from Sotokaifu: 9:30am – 3:30pm
