Pleasure Boats Tub Boat Rides Sea Strange Rocks and Bizarre Stones

Shukunegi Hangiri

At zero meters above sea level, glide through a world of handmade hangiri (tub boats). Since ancient times, the hangiri has been an essential fishing tool for the people of the Ogi Peninsula. Each boat is handcrafted using only cedar and bamboo, nurtured by the nature of Sado Island. With the historic streets of Shukunegi behind you—where time seems to have stopped in the Edo period—the boat drifts leisurely among otherworldly rock formations shaped by the earth over millennia. This eco-friendly slow cruise is guided by a local boatman who speaks the Ogi dialect (Ogi-ben).
