Obuse Shrine Annual Grand Festival
A festival featuring spirited Ojishi (the big lion)
This is a festival presented by Obuse Shrine, which was reputedly established by the manor lord of Nishimikawa, Honma Yamashiro Nyudo in the Muromachi Period (1392-1573). Two Ojishi (big lion) appear in the precinct of the shrine in the morning accompanied by the resonance of a conch shell. The lions move by shaking their bodies to the left and right in a unique, stylised manner. On the day of the festival, the Ojishi, a portable shrine, and Tengu (a legendary, supernatural creature) parade around an expansive area of twelve villages along the sea.
